Life Stages by Age

What life stage
are you in?

Every age range has a name — from infant to senior citizen. Here's how each stage is defined, including what age is a teenager, what age 32 is called, and what the 20–40 range is known as.

0 – 12 months

Infant

Newborns (0–4 weeks) transition into infants. Age is tracked in weeks and months — not years. All newborns begin at age 0 in the international system.

1 – 3 years

Toddler

Rapid language and motor development. Children learn to walk, talk and begin social awareness. Age 1–3 is also when Korean and Chinese age systems show the biggest difference from international age.

4 – 12 years

Child

Formal schooling begins. India's Right to Education Act guarantees free education for ages 6–14. Many government scheme benefits are age-gated at 12.

13 – 19 years

Teenager

Named after the "-teen" suffix in thirteen through nineteen. Adolescence, identity formation and secondary education define this stage. In India, 18 is the legal age of adulthood.

20 – 39 years

Young Adult

Ages 20–40 are classified as young adulthood — often called "prime age." Peak career-building, physical performance, and most government exam upper age limits fall in this window.

40 – 59 years

Middle Age

Age 32 is considered early prime-adult. By 40, most enter middle age — a period of career consolidation. The 7 stages of life (infancy → old age) place this as the fifth stage.

60+ years

Senior Citizen

In India, senior citizen status begins at 60 for most government schemes — pension, railway concessions and bank FD rates. Income-tax super-senior status kicks in at 80.

Everyone is born at age 1, and everyone ages by 1 on 1 January — regardless of birth month. So a December baby is already "2" by January. South Korea officially moved to international age in June 2023, but Korean age remains culturally referenced.

Similar to Korean age — you are 1 year old at birth. Age traditionally increments on the Lunar New Year rather than your birthday, so it can differ by 1–2 years from your international age depending on the time of year.
